Prostate enucleation with HOLMIUM laser

Laser prostate enucleation is a novel minimally invasive technique that allows the treatment of a large prostate (without limit).

Laser prostate enucleation consists of separating the entire prostatic adenoma with the laser (reproducing what is done with the finger in open surgery) and introducing it into the bladder to later extract it using a morcellator, which is a device that crushes and extracts prostate adenoma through the urethra (urinary canal) without resorting to open surgery.

It competes with open surgery, providing all the advantages already described of the laser.

Patients treated with laser may experience side effects during the first 10-15 days after surgery, which would be difficulty urinating, urinary urgency, and blood in the urine. It is important to keep in mind that all of these symptoms are temporary.

This technique provides the already described advantages of the laser, but also allows obtaining material for pathological analysis (biopsy), which makes it possible to rule out the presence of cancer in the tissue.

It can be carried out with different energy sources, one of them is the laser. There are various types of lasers used for prostate enucleation, the most used currently are the holmium laser, the green laser and the thulium laser. Depending on the type of laser used, each technique receives a name. For example, the acronym HoLEP stands for Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate and is the most used currently due to its good results in treating Benign Prostate Hyperplasia since it allows complete removal of the tissue and better results are obtained than if the green laser were used.
